Hello everyone, my name is Mai Soua Chang and I am from the United States of America. I am currently studying retail at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Through an awesome abroad program called LeaveUrMark, I was able to volunteer and do a business internship with Reaching Hand for 8 weeks.
I worked on various projects including: Girl’s Glory, creating a handbook/ syllabus for teaching good character building, and helping execute a fundraiser for the #HomeFor500 Project. I traveled from school to school, teaching girls about health, hygiene, sanitation, and puberty. We put together power points and made posters, motivational bookmarks, and My First Menstruation Kits for the girls. Even though I was unable to finish the handbook, I came up with multiple themes and activities as a guide for teachers to teach good character building inside and outside the classroom.
For my internship part of the experience, I came up with the business proposal, strategy, and budgeting for a project called Cupcakes for a Cause. (Cupcakes for a Cause was a fundraiser that went towards the #HomeFor500 Project). We presented the idea to various cupcake businesses and ended up collaborating with a baking institute where we baked and decorated over 1000 cupcakes then took them and sold them at a major corporate canteen in Bangalore.
I learned so much through Reaching Hand and I am so glad I had the opportunity to work with them for 8 weeks. All of the people there are nothing but phenomenal. They are so welcoming and so open to new ideas; they just create such a wonderful environment to work and learn in. I was also fortunate enough to visit the schools that they have contributed to as well as the New Home orphanage that they run. It’s such an amazing feeling to meet all of the children. Each and every child is so full of life and eager to learn; they really are an inspiration to all of us.
Thank you for giving me this irreplaceable opportunity Reaching Hand.
